I don't understand

My daughter and a friend picked up the idea of making their own book at school. They each folded about five sheets in two and asked the teacher to staple the papers together. She said: what a nice idea, but don't do it again because using so much paper is too expensive (!??). So yesterday evening I've been making some blank books to fill with their own stories. With printer-sheets and covers made from secondhand books with loose pages. Not expensive at all! She took one to school today.

What beautiful books! I have long been admiring your blog, don't think I've posted before. I love that your daughter wanted to make a book with her friend. Reminds me of me at that age!

But I want to defend the teacher. I imagine the paper used wasn't brought from home? I think it's important children learn to ask permission before using a public resource. The school probably has a limited budget and when it comes to public services (if this is a public school), every little thing has to be accounted for. 10 pieces of paper used that day may mean no paper for other days? Lastly, the teacher may have been sensitive to environmental concerns. I admit to loving books and loving paper but the degree that our culture uses trees is simply not sustainable.

what kind of a teacher disourages such creativity??!! does she count the number of sheets of paper when she gives out math homework? or spelling? or that she uses for her personal use??? ARG! in our school (small and public) lots of parents give "used" paper for the kids to draw on - one should never, never tell a child not to draw!! gigi

I really don't understand the teacher's concern, either. Maybe she was worried about the environment, the school bdget (as said previously) or even because she took the books by pieces of paper brought together but not thinking of the creativity spent. Sometimes teachers can be so silly!!!

These books are wonderful. Sometimes you don't have to understand teachers.

Mooi idee trouwens!
