Cookbook 7: Seasons from Donna Hay

'What are we going to eat?' is a daily question. Whatever I answer our 8-year-old nearly always says ' bwehh, don't like it'. In order to find a solution I asked her to pick recipes from a cookbook that looked nice to her. It seems to help. Although she didn't appreciate everything she picked, she was hesistant in saying so. More conscious about the words she chose. 'Not particually nice' instead of 'disgusting'. I would call it a successful experiment. Above you see one of the deserts she chose: coconut bread (this recipe without the candied grapefruit) and quick grapefruit jam (a bit like this recipe, with more grapefruit and less sugar and water).

I didn't stick to 'the one new recipe a week from one of my 138 cookbooks-resolution', during the summer holidays. But now we're starting again. A recipe to remember our vacation. Miren, my spanish friend, prepared a tortilla espanola for us for the day we arrived. Yummie! Last week we made one too, from the cookbook I got from her about 15 years ago. Not as good as Mirens', but very tasty. Accompanied by some fresh grilled zucchini's (this recipe without the garlic powder) from our garden.

The body language says enough. Penne with courgette and saffron was not appreciated by our youngest. And although this book 'vegetables' by Delphine de Montalier contains many very tasty recipes, we wouldn't make this one again.

Cookbook 4

There's not much crafting going on here. It's too hot in- and outside. But we need to eat, so here's another cookbookpost. Donna Hay again. Shrimp cookies. I can't find exactly the same recipe, but here's another prawn fritter recipe by the same author. The girls loved the idea of cookies for dinner.

Cookbook 3

I'd never grilled peppers before, because I thought it would be difficult to get the skin off. It isn't. And the soup we made with them was delicious (here's a similar recipe). It is from Donna Hay's book 'the new cook'. An often used book in this house. Her recipes are simple, with few ingredients and always have an original touch. Hooray for Donna Hay!

Cookbook 2

Next in line is this book. It was part of a very tasty set of products  from Fattoria la Vialla, that we got as a christmas present. In it were the first commercial sauces in jars that actually tasted like they were homemade. Yesterday we tried to make one ourselves: Fusilli with broccoli. Here you can find a similar recipe. You only need to add raisins. It is not my favourite dish, but the family liked it.

That's how many cookbooks we have on our shelf. Arranged by colour. Most of them hardly come off that shelf. So I set myself the goal to cook something new out of the next book in line every week. I let my husband choose from the first one. Grilled courgette, tomato and farmers cheese on a roll, heated on the grill again. Yummie! Here's a recipe that is a bit similar. I wouldn't use garlic powder and replace the dried herbs by fresh ones.
